3-D, Sharing and Lesson in Money Management

The long awaited movie of "Sunny with a chance of Meatballs" came out this week and we went and saw the 3D version. It was the boys' first experience with 3D, and it was AWESOME! They loved the effects and can't wait to see the next one! BTW, Scrooge looks good, even if it does feature the voice of Jim Carey whom I despise! During the preview of "A Christmas Carol" with the snowflakes all around us, Jared said in awe, "We're not in a movie theatre, we're in a dream!" One line, and this Mom feels that every penny was worth it for this movie! It really was a pretty entertaining movie too, so all is well!

After the movie, we went to the store to pick up some what started out as "necessities" and turned out to be an interesting lesson for Alex. The scenario: Alex has $12 burning a hole in his wallet/pocket and he HAS TO spend it. So a few days ago, I recorded that Alex wanted to spend his own money buying junk food, right? Well he's at the store, at last! So he went around the snack isles picking out bags of chocolate, all the while doing math in his head, making sure he's not passing the $12 limit. I gritted my teeth watching the bags of candy being dropped into the cart. He paused the figured out that well, maybe he doesn't want the chocolate chip cookies, because we can make them at home (by we of course he meant me!) and he put back the bag of oreos because he decided we still had Joe-Joe's left. Good for him! I was so proud! :D My baby all growing up and being responsible.

Several instances of grabbing by impulse, comparison shopping and putting things back, he settled on a bag of Hershey's Cookie N Cream; uh no, let's take a bag of Kiss instead; mm... no, Whoppers? No no, let's get two big Cookie N Cream bars; wait no, it's more expensive to get 2 bars that weigh less than the bag he began with! Anyhoooo, finally, he settled on a bag of mixed halloween candies that had all his favorite chocolate bars in the miniture sizes. PERFECT, right?! Then comes the toy isle, and LEGOs, Star Wars Legos to be precise... There comes the dilemma. The set he REALLY wants is $11! But the bag of candy was $7. and he only had $12... After much debate, he put back the candy and grabbed the Lego set instead. You don't know how happy I was to see that bag of candy go!!!

Ok, now comes the sharing part. Many standard "Mommy Alex wouldn't let me play with any of his new Lego pieces" and "I bought it with my OWN money!" and some tears and grumbles later. I had come to a conclusion that sharing, is impossible! So I tried logic on Jared. Yeah.... Goooood idea!
