Normally, the 3-year-old checkup isn't a big deal at all. No shots! Right... Well Jared has hypothyroidism, which means he takes a pill every morning for his thyroid function. Which also means that they have to check his blood to see if the thyroid pills are on target for him, or do they need to up the dose. So that's when problem comes in. As it is, as soon as we got to the doctor's office, he's panicing, "No no, I don't want to get a booboo!" Poor kid remembered! Doh! I tried to sidetrack him and the doctor was, as always, really good with him. That part passes without incident. Then comes the time for the lab, and there he goes again, "I don't want booboos!!!" I managed to calm him down, until... The incompetent nurse stuck him with the needle once and said "oops, it slipped out! can you believe that?!" Uh, yes, woman, I can! Get with it! Jared was surprisingly good at this point, and all he said to the stick in his arm was "ouch!" And needless to say, we all rushed to praises and telling him how good he was, etc, etc.
Then comes, the SECOND stick of the needle. Not only that, she was wiggling the needle inside his poor little arm, trying to find the vein that she claimed to have found before sticking him with the needle. He's crying and yelling "ow ow, no no". She finally gives up at this point. Then out comes, yet another nurse, who will try AGAIN, on his other arm this time.
This time, they REALLY had to hold him down. I'm holding him in front of me, holding tight onto his free arm, and tucking his legs between my knees, while nurse incompetent was holding his other arm steady to prep for the 3rd sticking of the needle. Yet again, the needle was wiggling around inside him, only time time, the nurse did manage to find blood. All is well! NOT!
Poor Jared. I had to calm him down with the promise of a milkshake! :D
