Cheng Huang Miao (temple)

This is going to be mainly a food blog.

Alex and I went to Cheng Huang Miao (City God's Temple) today, and had a good time. We wandered around the shops much like the rest of the tourists. And having had no breakfast, we decided to eat lunch early. And where better to eat a meal in Cheng Huang Miao than Nan Xiang! For those of you reading this blog that are, or were from Shanghai, you know which place I'm talking about.

Well, Nan Xiang is usually PACKED! But it being middle of winter, at 10:45am on a Thursday morning helped. The place was only half packed. We were able to find a seat in the not-so-scenic part of the restaurant, ie, it doesn't face the pond and Jiu Qu (nine-turns) bridge outside. Ah well, one can't have it all!

We ordered their most famous thing, naturally, xiao long bao. You HAVE TO try them if you visit Shanghai. They are wonderful! These small delicate thin-skinned buns usually has pork or pork with crabmeat on the inside, and you should bite off just a little bit of the skin first, so you can suck out the juice inside first. And this is where Nan Xiang makes its name. The best Xiao Long Bao in Shanghai, or for that matter, the whole of China.

xiao chi
more

We also got a set of what they call "xiao chi" (kinda like dim sum). Everything was so delicately made, it was adorable, and most of all, YUMMY!

Side note: Yes, how can I not gain weight in Shanghai??? It's about food, food and more food. But oh so worth it, well, almost. I've vowed to go back on my diet (or something like that) when I get back to the States. In the meantime, I'm gonna enjoy the best Chinese food I'm going to get in the next 3 years, as I doubt we'd be back here before that.

I thought that if you eat only Chinese food... that that was healty and that you dont get weight/fat.

But if you eat a lot :-) :-)

and I do! lol

But also, that Chinese food has gotten so much greasier. zIt used to be that Chinese food was very light, much like Japanese food is still. Not any more.

And Chinese people don't like wheat or multigrain flour. Everything's made of refined white flour. and lots more sweets nowadays, pastry, etc.

*BIG sigh* Too much yummy food, too bad for me! :D
